Lesson 0 – Challenges and Barriers

Assuming that you accept the rationale and potential benefits of project-based learning then the question is why is it not a more commonly adopted strategy in schools and colleges. In this lesson we look at the barriers to adoption and how the ideal becomes compromised to some kind of hybrid approach.

  1. Do you recognise the barriers to implementation? Which of these are dominant in your institution?
  2. How many of these barriers are personal to you and your immediate team? How might you need to change your thinking in order to adopt PBL in your department?
  3. Have you tried project-based learning and felt the approach compromised? Do you think those compromises affected the outcomes for learners?
